A Second Life® for Higher Education? Exploration and Discovery in a “3D Online Digital World”

What is this virtual 3D world called Second Life®? How is it different from other online simulation sites? What is an avatar? What are Linden dollars? How do you spend them? Why are business and education interested in this virtual world? How is the USF Tampa Library already using Second Life®? Can you own that tropical island (virtual) you always wanted? Find out the answers to these and other questions as Ilene Frank and Drew Smith explore the nature of Second Life® and show examples of university courses taught in Second Life®.

Now that we understand the concept of this virtual 3D world that is owned by its residents and constantly re-imagined by them, Mary Cuadrado and Louis Lieberman will discuss and demonstrate their explorations with Second Life®, including possibilities they see for teaching opportunities in the future through Second Life® and/or other simulation sites. How would faculty even begin to use this creative tool? Become a part of Second Life® at this demonstration and find out.

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE MODERATOR

David A. Williams

Williams is an associate professor of music education, and associate director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida where he teaches classes in instrumental music education and technology. His research interests center on the enhancement of teaching/learning situations in music education, especially with technology. Dr. Williams recently completed work on a research project that involves the creation of digital music videos with k-12 students and teachers as an alternate model, using technology, to learn about the arts. Presently he is investigating the types of meanings acquired by teenagers through participation in musical activities in and out of school.

Dr. Williams chairs "the Council on Technologies for Instruction and Research; a standing Council of the USF Faculty Senate which receives authority for its actions through that body. The Council is responsible for advising the USF Faculty Senate and the Provost on all matters pertaining to the function, policies, and requirements regarding the use of technology in instruction and research."
